About Russell

I was born into a police family and grew up all over Queensland as my father, Roy Field, served over 37 years in the force. As a “copper’s kid,” I experienced life in Rockhampton, Cairns, Townsville, Longreach, and finally Brisbane, with my mother Violet holding our family together through every move.

The most significant moment of my life happened in October 1976 when I met Ann on a football cruise around the South Pacific. Despite her mother’s initial suspicions about a young footballer, Ann and I married in 1980 and have built over 44 years of life together. She has always been my rock, and I am hers.

Together, we raised three wonderful children—Andrew, Matthew, and Kimberley—in a household centred around Aussie Rules football weekends and Easter camping trips with mates. Today, I’m a proud grandfather to five grandchildren: Olivia, Molly, Duke, Jasper, and Vann, whose joy and innocence bring us immense happiness.

After completing my apprenticeship as a young bloke, I worked as a builder for many years before retiring. I thought I’d spend my retirement years simply enjoying time with my grandchildren, but life had other plans.

In January 2021, our family suffered an unimaginable tragedy when our son Matthew, his partner Kate, and their unborn baby Miles were killed by a juvenile offender. Then in 2023, our eldest son Andrew was diagnosed with brain cancer and passed away in June 2024. Through these profound losses, I’ve been sustained by the love of family and the kindness of our community.

At 69, I became what I consider “the most unlikely member of parliament” when I stepped forward as the LNP candidate for Capalaba, motivated by the need for youth justice reform and support for victims of crime.

Today, I stand in parliament with clear purpose. I stand with victims. I believe in justice. To the people of Capalaba, I am here to fight for you—whether dealing with banks, council issues, or healthcare concerns.

My job is to honour the legacy of Matt, Kate, Miles, and Andrew, and to serve the good people of Capalaba with all my heart.
